The Magnet Recognition Program was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to recognize healthcare organizations that provide exceptional nursing care and uphold the tenets of professional nursing practice. The program also provides a vehicle for disseminating best practices and successful strategies among healthcare organizations. Currently there more than 300 Magnet organizations with hundreds more in the applications process. Regardless of a healthcare organizations size, setting, or location, achieving Magnet designation attracts and retains quality employees and ensures positive healthcare outcomes for consumers. When U.S. News and World Report published its annual showcase of "America's Best Hospitals", being a Magnet facility contributed to the total score for quality of inpatient care. Among the hospitals listed on the exclusive 2008 Honor Roll rankings, seven of the top ten were Magnet hospitals. (July 10, 2008)
